Michelle Chen is currently the lead on the Small-body Maneuvering Autonomous Real-Time Navigation (SMART Nav) for NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART). This project made news recently when a spacecraft was sent to deliberately crash into a small asteroid, Dimorphos that was circling a larger asteroid, Didymos.

The point of the test was to see if NASA would be able to change the path of an asteroid whose course was considered a threat to Earth. Thanks to Michelle and her team's work on the spaceship navigation system, the test was successful! Not only did the DART crash into Dimorphos, but it also significantly altered its trajectory around Didymos.

Boolean Girl's STEM Ambassador program provides an opportunity to introduce your daughter to a woman STEM professional! This is a free, online event for girls in grades 3 and up to learn about different STEM fields and the women working in them.
